Celebration 2011
This year marks Smith’s 21st annual CELEBRATION. The event was originally founded by members of Cushing House (so proud!) in response to a series of homophobic chalkings on campus, and has since become an important Smith tradition in which students celebrate the freedom to love whomever we choose. This year’s lineup included fabulous performances by all of the quad houses, acapella groups, and the rugby team.
“Love is not controlled by gender,
It is larger than prejudice,
It is stronger than indifference,
For the love of our community,
And the love of ourselves,
We Celebrate!
Those who find joy and beauty,
In loving without boundaries.”

The Occupy Wall Street Movement has found its way from the the streets of New York to the streets of Northampton. This Thursday, between 30 and 50 people gathered outside the bank of America to express their discontent with corporate greed, economic disparity, political corruption, and a host of other issues affecting our country’s population.
Instead of holding traditional class, one of my professors brought sign-making materials and took us to the protest! The only requirement was that we made a sign that referenced material or issues we had explored in our class: “Engineering and Global Development.”
That’s me holding our ‘Laissez not Faire” poster.
“Show me what Democracy looks like / This is what democracy looks like”
